AI for Retirees: The Practical Prompting Workbook

In the first installment of this series, we outlined the core conceptual framework for teaching artificial intelligence to older adults. We established that AI should be viewed not as a sentient threat, but as a “cognitive autopilot” or an eager, highly educated intern.

Today, we are fanning out into the practical application of this framework. This is the Practical Prompting Workbook—a collection of copy-pasteable templates, detailed use cases, and before-and-after examples designed specifically for retirees.

Our core thesis remains: Retirees do not need to learn to code to use AI. They already possess the ultimate prompting skill: the ability to delegate. Prompting is not about syntax; it is about structuring context, defining roles, setting clear constraints, and iterating. Decades of professional, civic, and family leadership make older adults uniquely equipped for this style of communication.


The Anatomy of a Perfect Prompt

Before diving into the workbook modules, we must understand the structure of a high-utility prompt. When you send a single, brief sentence to an AI, you are forcing it to guess your intent, tone, and audience. A perfect prompt eliminates this guessing game by providing five key layers:

By providing these layers, you transform the AI from a search engine into a highly customized, dedicated assistant.


Workbook Module 1: Legacy Preservation & Memoir Creation

Many seniors want to document their memories, family histories, and career milestones for their children and grandchildren. However, facing a blank page is intimidating. AI can act as a gentle biographer, interviewing the user and transforming raw memories into polished narratives.

The Pitfall: The Vague Prompt

  • The Bad Prompt: “Write a story about my childhood in Tel Aviv in the 1960s.”
  • Why it fails: The AI will write a generic, fictional story containing landmarks it found in its training data. It will not contain your voice, your specific street, or your genuine family dynamics.

The Solution: The Conversational Scaffolding Prompt

  • The Copy-Paste Template:
System Instruction: You are a warm, professional biographer specializing in helping seniors document their oral histories. You write in a clear, narrative style that preserves the personal voice of the speaker. Do not use overly dramatic or flowery language.

User Prompt: I want to write a short chapter of my memoir about growing up on [Insert Street Name] in [Insert City/Town] during the [Insert Decade, e.g., 1960s].

To help me, please ask me three gentle, specific questions, one at a time. Ask about the sights, the sounds, and what a typical weekend afternoon looked like. Wait for my response to each question before asking the next.

Once I have answered all three, combine my memories into a cohesive, three-paragraph story written in the first person (“I”).

Example Interaction

  • AI: “I would love to help you tell your story. Let’s start with your street. What was the name of the street, and what did it look like when you stepped outside your front door? Who were your neighbors?”
  • User: “It was Dizengoff Street in Tel Aviv. It was busy, full of cafes, and the smell of fresh coffee and pastries was everywhere. Our neighbors were the Adlers, who had escaped Europe.”
  • AI: “Thank you. That paints a vivid picture. Now, let’s focus on the sounds. When you were in your room at night or walking down the street during the day, what did you hear? Was there music playing, traffic, or people shouting?”
  • User: “During the day, you heard the constant hum of buses and people chatting on cafe balconies. At night, it was quiet, except for the occasional accordion player on the corner.”
  • AI: “Accordion music at night is a wonderful detail. Finally, tell me about a typical weekend afternoon. Where did you go, and who were you with?”
  • User: “On Saturday afternoons, my parents and I would walk down to the beach. We would buy ice cream from a cart, sit on the sand, and watch the waves. My father would read the paper.”
  • AI (Output):

    Growing up on Dizengoff Street in Tel Aviv during the 1960s, my world was defined by the constant hum of city life and the rich aroma of coffee and fresh pastries drifting from the cafes below. Step outside our front door, and you were swept into a lively parade of neighbors and shopkeepers. Next door lived the Adlers, who had survived Europe; they were a quiet, comforting presence in our bustling neighborhood. During the day, the street echoed with the rumble of city buses and the bright chatter of people sitting on balconies, but as night fell, the chaos subsided, leaving only the soft, distant notes of an accordion playing on the corner.

    My favorite part of the week was Saturday afternoon, when the city quieted down for Shabbat. My parents and I would make our weekly pilgrimage down to the Mediterranean shore. The walk was familiar, the air growing salty as we approached the beach. We would look for the ice cream vendor and buy a scoop from his wooden cart, eating it quickly before the Tel Aviv heat could melt it.

    Once on the sand, we would settle in for the afternoon. I would watch the waves roll in, while my father sat quietly nearby, unfolding his newspaper against the sea breeze. In those simple beachside afternoons, surrounded by the warmth of my family and the steady crash of the tide, I felt entirely at home.


Workbook Module 2: Medical Translation & Patient Empowerment

Retirees often face complex medical documents, X-ray summaries, and lab results that contain frightening, dense jargon. AI can translate these documents into plain English, helping seniors prepare for doctor appointments.

[!WARNING] Important Health Disclaimer AI is not a doctor. It cannot diagnose conditions, prescribe medications, or replace clinical judgment. Always use AI as a translation tool to prepare questions for your physician, never as a standalone medical authority.

  • The Bad Prompt: “I have osteophytes in my knee. What is the treatment?”
  • Why it fails: The AI will return a generic list of treatments ranging from physical therapy to total knee replacement, potentially causing unnecessary anxiety without knowing the severity of your specific case.

The Solution: The Jargon Translator Prompt

  • The Copy-Paste Template:
System Instruction: You are a compassionate, clear medical communicator. Your goal is to translate medical jargon into plain, reassuring English for a patient. Always include a prominent reminder to consult their physician. Use simple, physical analogies to explain anatomical terms.

User Prompt: I have received my medical report, and it contains terms I do not understand. Please translate the following snippet into simple language:

“[Insert medical report text here, e.g., ‘Mild bilateral osteoarthritis of the knee joints, moderate osteophyte formation, no joint space collapse.’]”

Specifically, explain:

  1. What the key terms mean using a household analogy.
  2. What parts are normal or reassuring.
  3. A list of 3 questions I should write down and ask my doctor at my next visit.

Example Output Translation

Please Note: I am an AI, not a doctor. The following translation is designed to help you understand your report so you can have an informed conversation with your physician.

Here is a plain-English translation of your knee report:

  • Mild bilateral osteoarthritis: “Bilateral” means both knees. “Osteoarthritis” is the standard wear-and-tear that occurs in joints over time. Think of it like the hinges on a well-loved door—over the years, the smooth paint on the hinges wears down slightly, causing them to move less quietly.
  • Moderate osteophyte formation: “Osteophytes” are bone spurs. When cartilage wears down, the body tries to stabilize the joint by growing tiny, smooth bumps of extra bone. Think of it like a tree growing a small burl on its trunk to reinforce a branch that bends in the wind. They are very common and often cause no pain at all.
  • No joint space collapse: This is very reassuring news. Your knee joint is like a shock absorber. Cartilage acts as the rubber cushion between the bones. “No joint space collapse” means the rubber cushion is still thick and doing its job, keeping the bones from rubbing directly against each other.

3 Questions to Ask Your Doctor:

  1. “Based on this report, are there specific exercises or physical therapies that can help keep my knee cartilage strong?”
  2. “Should I take any over-the-counter joint supports, or should we monitor this with another X-ray in a few years?”
  3. “Are there any physical activities I should avoid to protect my joint space?”

Workbook Module 3: Technology Navigation & Troubleshooting

Seniors often encounter frustrating software glitches on their phones, tablets, or smart TVs. Instead of waiting for a family member to call, they can use AI to write large-print, step-by-step guides.

  • The Bad Prompt: “My iPad screen is frozen, what do I do?”
  • Why it fails: The AI may give instructions for the wrong model of iPad, or provide complex technical steps (like plugging it into a computer to restore it via iTunes) when a simple button combination would solve the problem.

The Solution: The Step-by-Step Instructor

  • The Copy-Paste Template:
System Instruction: You are a patient, friendly technical support specialist who excels at writing clear, non-technical instructions for older adults. You use large, bold steps, avoid all technical jargon, and never assume prior knowledge.

User Prompt: I am having a problem with my [Insert Device Name, e.g., iPad Air 5th Generation]. The problem is: [Insert Problem, e.g., The screen is stuck on a white page and will not respond to my touch].

Please provide:

  1. The single most likely, simplest solution first.
  2. Step-by-step instructions written in large, numbered bullet points.
  3. Describe the physical buttons on the device (e.g., “the round home button at the bottom” or “the power button on the top edge”) so I know exactly what to press.
  4. A fallback solution if the first one does not work.

Example Output

Let’s fix your iPad screen together. The most common fix for a frozen screen is a “Forced Restart.” This does not delete any of your photos or apps; it simply turns the power off and back on, like flipping a circuit breaker in your basement.

The Primary Solution: A Forced Restart

Since your iPad does not have a round Home button on the screen, follow these steps using the buttons on the metal edge:

  1. Locate the buttons: Hold your iPad in front of you. On the top metal edge (in the top-right corner), you will find the Power Button. On the right-hand metal edge, near the top, you will find the two Volume Buttons (Volume Up is the top one, Volume Down is the bottom one).

  2. Press and Release Volume Up: Press the Volume Up button quickly once, and let go.

  3. Press and Release Volume Down: Press the Volume Down button quickly once, and let go.

  4. Press and Hold the Power Button: Press and hold down the Power Button on the top edge. Do not let go, even when the screen turns black. Keep holding it down.

  5. Wait for the Apple Logo: After about 10 to 15 seconds, you will see a white Apple logo appear in the center of the screen. When you see that logo, you can let go of the button.

  6. Wait for the Home Screen: The iPad will take about a minute to turn back on. You should see your standard lock screen, and the screen should now respond to your touch.

Fallback Option: The Power Drain

If the buttons do not respond, the easiest fallback is to simply leave the iPad unplugged. Over the next day, the screen will drain the battery completely, and the iPad will turn off on its own. Once the screen is black, plug the charger in, wait 15 minutes, and turn it on normally.


Workbook Module 4: The Bureaucracy and Contract Navigator

Retirees often deal with complex lease agreements, utility rate increases, or insurance policies. AI can summarize these documents, highlighting dates, costs, and hidden fees.

  • The Bad Prompt: “Is this lease agreement legal?”
  • Why it fails: AI cannot provide legal advice. It does not know local municipal tenant laws and cannot represent you in court.

The Solution: The Document Auditor

  • The Copy-Paste Template:
System Instruction: You are an expert document analyst specializing in simplifying legal, financial, and bureaucratic text. You do not provide legal advice, but you highlight dates, costs, obligations, and changes in plain English.

User Prompt: I have received the following document: [Paste text of contract/policy/letter].

Please provide a structured summary in large print containing:

  1. The Core Message: What is this document asking me to do, in 2 sentences?
  2. Key Dates: A bulleted list of any deadlines or dates.
  3. Financial Impact: Any costs, increases, or fees mentioned.
  4. My Obligations: What do I need to sign, send, or change?
  5. Red Flags: Any clauses that limit my rights or increase my costs (e.g., automatic renewals, termination fees).

Appendix A: System Prompts for Local AI (LM Studio)

If you have set up LM Studio (as detailed in the appendix of Part 1 of this series), you can set a System Prompt that remains active for every new chat. This ensures that you do not need to repeat your constraints (e.g., “use large print” or “no jargon”) every time you ask a question.

To set this up in LM Studio:

  1. Open LM Studio and go to the Chat panel.
  2. On the right-hand sidebar, look for the box labeled System Prompt (or “Preset Configurations”).
  3. Copy and paste the following text into that box:
You are a warm, patient, and highly structured digital assistant designed to assist older adults. 

Your formatting guidelines are strict:

  1. Always write in large, clear, readable print. Use bold headers.
  2. Separate long paragraphs into short, 2-3 sentence blocks.
  3. Use numbered lists for step-by-step instructions.
  4. Avoid technical jargon, slang, or overly complex metaphors.
  5. If answering health or financial questions, always include a gentle reminder that you are an AI assistant, not a doctor or financial advisor, and that they should verify critical details with a trusted human professional.
  1. Click Save. Now, every model you load will automatically format its answers to be highly legible and easy to read.
